SUMMARY:Directors' Forum- Values Based Messaging for Impact
DESCRIPTION:Directors’ Forum \nValues-Based Messaging for Impact \nThursday\, June 9\, 2022 \n2pm-4pm \nWe’ve all seen the explosion of bills in other states as well as in Virginia that scapegoat communities (e.g. anti-immigrant and “don’t say gay” bills)\, limit access to reproductive health options\, and bring forth a host of other outcomes that negatively impact survivors of sexual and domestic violence. \nThe work to end violence and the work to end oppression are one in the same; our work is by its very nature political and requires us to confront policies and messaging that promote division\, violence\, and oppression. \nAt the June 2022 Directors’ Forum\, the Action Alliance would like to introduce a proven messaging and organizing framework that counters divide and conquer politics and advances a worldview in which all of us thrive by weaving together race and class in its messaging. The Race Class Narrative builds cross-racial solidarity and promotes policies and approaches that serve us all and link shared economic prosperity directly to racial justice. Research consistently shows that speaking affirmatively about race strengthens our ability to mobilize people who care about our issues while challenging and undermining messages that feed on and stoke fear\, xenophobia\, and resentment. \nWe think that we can apply this framework to issues that impact survivors\, weaving gender-based violence prevention into the proven race class narrative messaging structure. We can both persuade and win hearts and minds when we employ messaging frameworks that work!

SUMMARY:Intention Based Graphic Design
DESCRIPTION:Intention-Based Graphic Design\nThe stories we tell through graphic design shows our community who we are and what we value most. Our designs are often a first impression and set the tone for the relationships we’ll cultivate and the audiences we reach. \nBeing able to tell a story through our designs that captures our mission and values with intention is essential! Throughout this two-part series\, we‘ll walk you through best practices\, tools\, and resources to help you do just that. You’ll even have an opportunity to put these new skills into practice and receive feedback or assistance with current projects you’re creating. \nPart I: Accessible Design\nThursday\, July 14th\, 1PM – 3PM \nDuring this session\, we will walk you through best practices for creating designs that are accessible. The colors\, fonts\, and layouts you use can all have an important impact on whether or not your design is truly able to get your message to your audience. \nYou will also have an opportunity to create your own design\, with an opportunity to receive feedback during this session. \nPart II: Trauma-Informed and Inclusive Design\nThursday\, July 21\, 1PM – 3PM \nPart two of this series will dive into your organization’s values and how those values can be incorporated into designs to create pieces that will resonate with your target audience. You will also receive resources to help you find elements to use in future designs. \nThere will also be an opportunity for you to share your organization’s values simply through the use of visuals. \nMembers may attend this for free; $25.00 for each session or $40 if you register for both for non members.

SUMMARY:ReStoryation\, BIPOC Advocates
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 2 years\, we have all navigated significant and sometimes overwhelming crises. As advocates\, that has meant responding to the needs of survivors in addition to caring for ourselves\, our families\, and others who are dear to us. What we’ve come to know as normal has changed. Whether the past 2 or so years has brought us sorrow\, fear\, joy\, new opportunities\, grief\, overwhelm\, new beginnings\, or a combination of all of the above…it has brought change to all of us. \nWhen life puts us through challenges\, nature can help us make sense of what is happening and guide us through. Nature tells stories of trauma\, healing\, and regeneration. Learning from nature and using story can help us remember\, process\, and integrate our experiences. \nWe can look to the story of mycelium that spreads across the forest floor and underground to create a network. Or to the root system of trees that go deep and wide to communicate to other trees around them how to find resources and avoid threats. These systems depend on the health and needs of the collective so that the whole system can thrive. \nWe invite you to reconnect with advocates across the state through the practice of storytelling. Much like mycelium\, we hope this space will foster connection and restoration through storytelling\, art\, food\, and community. The past 2 and a half years have made many of us feel isolated\, but the truth is that we are still very much connected\, we just need the space to find that again.

SUMMARY:The Hope Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join the Action Alliance in our new office as we take time to celebrate advocates across Virginia\, recognize our new Lifetime Members\, and honor those who continue to inspire hope for a violence-free Virginia. \nRSVP: https://bit.ly/hopereception2022 \nOur Honorees: \n\nToni Zollicoffer\, Director\, Fairfax Office of Domestic and Sexual Violence Services\n\nAs a member of the Statewide Advisory Committee on Sexual and Domestic Violence\, Toni led a study group on partner abuse intervention and prevention. Recommendations from the study group have led to both local and statewide initiatives addressing the harm that takes place within intimate partner relationships through trauma-informed healing and accountability programs. \n\nDelegate Carrie Coyner (VA-62)\n\nSince joining the House of Delegates in 2020\, Del. Coyner has developed a strong reputation for working across the aisle on a number of issues impacting children\, families\, and survivors of sexual and domestic violence. In 2022\, she worked to secure $9M in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) appropriations to maintain level funding for Virginia’s sexual and domestic violence crisis centers. She is a steadfast advocate\, routinely organizing her colleagues in the House to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and raise awareness about the power of preventing violence in our communities. \n\nDelegate Patrick Hope (VA-47)\n\nDel. Hope has been a member of the House of Delegates since 2010\, is a long-time friend of the Action Alliance\, and a champion on sexual and domestic violence issues. Most recently\, he worked alongside the Action Alliance\, the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia\, and sexual and domestic violence advocates to expand the Supreme Court’s successful Hope Card Program\, allowing survivors who are granted final protective orders access to a wallet-sized card summarizing the order’s critical information.
