Statement on the IPV Fatalities of Dr. Cerina Fairfax and Former Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax

We are devastated by the news that former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife, accomplished dentist Dr. Cerina Fairfax, and then shot and killed himself. Our hearts are with their children, who were present in the home while this tragedy took place, loved ones, and all those impacted by this profound loss.

Sadly, IPV tragedies like this are common. Abuse tends to escalate when couples are breaking up and/or separated which can result in this horrific end. If you hear threats and see warning signs in the lives of our loved ones, it’s important to recognize them and to be ready to support that person, plan for their safety, and get connected to a domestic violence advocate.

For survivors and community members, news like this can be deeply traumatizing. Confidential, survivor-centered support is available 24/7/365 if you or someone you know is worried about their safety at the Virginia Statewide Sexual and Domestic Violence Hotline:
